Time Pieces "Boundary Problems"

LP - $14.00
STREET DATE: 4/26/24
CAT#: MOM078
LABEL: Mind Over Matter

Time Pieces is made up of former members of Band of Horses, Minus the Bear & Six Parts Seven...and if you listen closely, you may hear tiny reminders of each of them throughout Boundary Problems. Allen Karpinski, Chris Early, Ian LeSage, Erin Tate and Tucker Handler got together to create this beautifully layered, largely instrumental album that weaves threads of shoegaze, post-rock, and late-90s Midwest indie into something of their own throughout the course of their debut full length.

If you close your eyes and allow the music to transport you, you will find yourself smack dab in the middle of a dreary, Midwestern winter. It's half-melted outside, too cold to leave your jacket at home but too warm to truly necessitate one. You've got your headphones on as you walk to your destination despite the blustery wind. You've got a lot on your mind, but you're keeping yourself busy with errands and this is the soundtrack to being alone...even if you're not lonely.

Sure, this is definitely a supergroup of indie artists, but they have forged a terrific path that somehow resembles each of their respective bands while also finding a sound that is entirely unique and their own.

Damien Done “Total Power”

LP - $15.95
STREET DATE: 7/28/23
CAT#: MOM074
LABEL: Mind Over Matter

Formed under Miami's neon lights and reborn in the post-industrial wastelands of Detroit, Damien Done plays gloomy post-punk, weaving unnerving tales through a distinct and narrative croon.

After decades as celebrated hardcore punk front-man, here Damien brings the angst of that legacy to a near-grinding halt, instead plodding forward with measured restraint and revealing influences as disparate -- and rarely-conjoined -- as gothic rock, new wave, disco and doom, with vocals that evoke comparisons to the sneering baritones of Billy Idol, Jim Morrison or Danzig.

After a lone full length album and a series of singles, EPs and oddball vinyl releases, Damien Done returns with their sophomore full length album, Total Power.

In stark contrast with 2020's To Night EP - a full-band recording with a massive, live sound - Total Power easily volleys between dark, goth-tinged rockers and minimal, electronic tracks; serving densely-layered synths and returning brooding new wave. The result is dynamic and unfolding, finding Damien Done's point of view fully realized, expressed boldly & with sophistication.

While the series of EPs and singles that have led us to Total Power might first serve as sonic disparity of the LP at hand, further listens reveal that they were simply a black-robed dress rehearsal for the maddening final show. The subject matter across Total Power covers self-abuse, murder, addiction, and unrequited love, often from the point of view of the antagonist. This lurid perspective offers a bone-chilling edge, even among the most upbeat songs on the album.

Here in the grips of Total Power, we look to the skies...but never to pray.

  1. Maw
  2. Black Moon

Guilt "Bardstown Ugly Box"

LP + 7"EP - $17.50
STREET DATE: 5/5/23
CAT#: MOM068
LABEL: Mind Over Matter

Guilt's impact and overall relevance went largely unrecognized during their six-year tenure as an intense and emotive über-indie-noise-metal-hardcore band. Their songs combined the best elements of several genres without sounding contrived and managed to evoke soulful emotion and raise thought-provoking questions within the confines of a musical style typically confined to mundane "evil" topics and horror imagery. Guilt evolved from the band Stepdown, which formed in 1991 with former Endpoint drummer Lee Fetzer and Endpoint bassist Kyle Noltemeyer on guitar, Christian McCoy on bass, powerhouse drummer Jon Smith, and Endpoint guitarist Duncan Barlow on vocals. Stepdown were fiercely political and rabidly confrontational, going head to head with the Nazi faction of the Louisville scene on more than one occasion. As Barlow's own personal battle with depression set in, however, the group's focus shifted and soon the name was changed. Fetzer left the group and Barlow picked up second guitar in addition to vocal duties. The Empty 7" was recorded at Mom's Studio and released by Initial, a small record label then based in Michigan. After a handful of shows, the band dissolved for almost a year, eventually re-forming and recording several new songs at DSL Studios that would later become the Synethesia 10"/CD EP on Initial. The record was heavy and intense, with darkly poetic lyrics and song titles named after colors picked to represent various moods. McCoy was replaced by Telephone Man's Ashli State before the band signed a deal with Chicago's Victory Records label. Guilt entered the studio with producer/Shellac member Bob Weston, who helped the band hone their sound by enhancing the drums, bringing down the metal element in the guitars, and eliciting top-notch, emotional performances. The end result was Bardstown Ugly Box, the band's masterwork, so named for a street in their native Louisville, KY. It was years ahead of its time in the hardcore/punk scene, fusing elements of noise, melody, heavy metal, punk rock, indie rock, and poetic storytelling seamlessly, with intensity yet class

For the 2023 reissue of this classic album, Mind Over Matter Records worked closely with the band as they revisited the audio and preserved that energy & effort into the physical release. The digital remix was completed by Steve Evetts (Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die), it was mastered by Brian Luken and then carefully cut into lacquer form by Dave Eck at Lucky Lacquers. With two newly unearth bonus tracks, MOMR also added in a bonus 7" to ensure that purists can continue to enjoy Bardstown Ugly Box as they've always known it and everyone gets the opportunity to hear previously unavailable tracks separate from the original track listing.

Dad Hats "Spill"

LP - $14.00
STREET DATE: 4/7/23
CAT#: MOM072
LABEL: Mind Over Matter

Dad Hats is a four-piece rock outfit from Nashville, Tennessee, whose music oozes "indie rock charm mixed with the grit of upbeat pop-punk." Their sophomore release, Spill, comes complete with earworm guitar riffs, locomotor rhythms, and lyrics that are equal parts poignant and self-deprecating. Dad Hats harness the sound of parties you barely remember and embarrassing memories you kinda wish you could forget through the jangly and melodic guitar parts underpinned by the stealthy rhythm section that keeps bringing the pace back to an uptempo bounce. While the overall sound and aesthetic feel reminiscent and familiar, the vocals and lyrical themes avoid the childish histrionics of the genre.

For the physical release of Spill, Mind Over Matter Records presents the usual beautiful color variants packaged inside of a reverse board jacket, each one adorned with a screen printed image unique to the vinyl variant. The album layout was designed with several alternate covers, and they were able to produce limited run versions to accompany the various color options. The DIY canvases affixed to the front covers of the jackets were screen printed by hand at Mind Over Matter Records on high quality French Paper and then put into place one at a time across the entire pressing. It's a fun pop of flair on an incredible DIY release.

Pilot To Gunner / Her Head's On Fire "Split"

7"EP - $6.50
STREET DATE: 9/30/22
CAT#: MOM073
LABEL: Mind Over Matter

Fresh off of the release of their respective new full length albums, we have a split release between two NYC artists: indie punk stalwarts Pilot To Gunner (who are returning for their first new bits of music since 2012) and newcomers Her Head's On Fire who just released their debut LP via Iodine Recordings. Though the moniker of Her Head's On Fire might be new, the sheer amount of punk rock tenure present within the band is only compounded when the likes of Pilot To Gunner are thrown into the mix. With members that have cut their teeth in bands such as Garrison, Saves The Day, the Bomb and Small Brown Bike, you might think that you're going to get an explosive hit of punk mixed with indie rock and just a dab of post-hardcore mixed in for flair..and you'd be correct.

Intended to be a fun project between old friends, this split marks a perfect little exclamation point to the songs that have already been released by both bands in the recent months, as they have both artists going out with a "bang" and leaving everyone wanting more. If you're unfamiliar with the works available prior to this split, it will serve as an excellent launching point for anyone who is just discovering either artist, as both songs run parallel to the full lengths that precede them.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Pilot To Gunner - "Gone For Real"
  2. Her Head's On Fire - "Just The Way You Are"

Spitfire “Cult Fiction”

Spitfire “Cult Fiction”

2xLP - $20.65
STREET DATE: 8/19/22
CAT#: MOM058
LABEL:Mind Over Matter

The band that quietly influenced an entire generation of chaotic metallic hardcore - Spitfire - saw their final album released in April of 2008 and is finally seeing the vinyl version pressed 14 years posthumously. Cult Fiction (potentially a subtle reference to vocalist Jon Spencer's previous work on Scarlet's "Cult Classic") is an exercise in extremity both in terms of the mathematical churning of the riffs as well as the disparity between the madness and the soft, mechanical interludes interspersed throughout the album. Cult Fiction was ultimately the band's swan song, with members going on to join Norma Jean & Mae and leaving in their wake a newly reformed Scarlet as well. They certainly went out with a bang, and we are excited to re-introduce the album on a new format all these years later!

Juniper Youth "Poison"

7"EP - $6.50
STREET DATE: 8/5/22
CAT#: MOM071
LABEL: Mind Over Matter

"The roots of Juniper Youth, a power trio out of Boston, Massachusetts, dig deep into the past to unearth a taste of the future. Shaped by family blood, lifelong friendships and inspirations ranging from J-Dilla to Deftones, JY delivers its signature doom-pop with a thuggish rhythm section, celestial guitar work and impassioned, tear-out-your-heart vocals. Don’t think of it as a cure for your attitude problem, rather The Cure with an attitude problem." - Andrew Bishop Juniper Youth features 3 members of Irepress (vocalist Jarrett Ring and brothers Shan and Sheel Davé on guitar and drums respectively), carving out new territory outside of the post rock universe that they helped to shape and influence. Taking this on, they've used the same off-kilter, super slick rhythm section and combined it with powerful rock vocals. For their follow-up single, Mind Over Matter Records followed up with a limited edition 7" package that highlights Poison on the A-side in all its glory and for the B-side they've got a vinyl-only instrumental version! This is the perfect companion piece to the Full Sun single that was released last year and is the only place to catch another glimpse of the instrumental side of the band after the release of their debut LP.

  1. Poison
  2. Poison (Instrumental)
