Retox "Beneath California"

LP - $17.50
STREET DATE: 4/19/24
CAT#: 31G079
LABEL: Three One G

The world is falling apart one day at a time, and the majority of us sit and watch as if attending a public hanging--more and more, our interest is piqued by the appalling, while our thoughts and reactions remain largely absent. When stripped of the bloated, festering egos that so many cling to in order to feel important, we are nothing more than ugly animals. In a society that is predominantly dormant, Retox brings this reality to the forefront in a forward-thinking way, commanding our ever-rapidly-decreasing attention spans and determined to provoke some kind of visceral response, good or bad.

Consisting of Justin Pearson (The Locust, Deaf Club, Swing Kids), Michael Crain (Festival of Dead Deer, Dead Cross), Brian Evans, and Keith Hendriksen (Kill the Capulets, Virginia Reed), Retox is marked by a speed and sound that seeks to shatter apathy. Since their conception in 2011, they have toured with similarly like-minded acts such as Melt-Banana, Tomahawk, OFF!, The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Doomsday Student, physically bringing every bit as much intensity as the music itself incites intellectually.

Coming off of their sophomore album, "YPLL" (Years of Potential Life Lost), Retox have emerged from the collective depths of San Diego and Los Angeles with their latest antagonistic efforts, entitled "Beneath California". Varying styles and sonically experimenting, melding the raw with the refined, the band continuously teases yet never settles on any one genre-- aside from perhaps (as members of the band itself have referred to their work) "annoying". Tracks such as "Death Will Change Your Life" spit cynical lyrics drenched in rapid-fire rhythm: "All those who have died before me, forgot trustees, cleaned streets with parolees/They dragged everything into the sea, the filth and the debris, and hoped none would see."

Overall, Retox simultaneously seems to reflect and defy, using music as a way of holding a broken mirror to the rest of us, exposing different pieces of our own fucked up realities, and forcing the acknowledgement of the inevitable self-imposed apocalypse we are creating for ourselves.

TRACK LISTING:
01. Die In Your Own Cathedral
02. We Know Who's The Prick
03. The Savior, The Swear Word
04. Let's Not Keep In Touch
05. Disappointing Grade

7"EP UPC: 667758960971
STREET DATE: 3/22/24
CAT#: 31G142
LABEL: Three One G

For this split, The HIRS Collective combine chaotic forces with Deaf Club on an original track, "Biblical Loophole" as well as a Nirvana cover of "Tourette's." The HIRS Collective exists to fight for, defend, and celebrate the survival of trans, queer, poc, black, women and any and all other folks who have to constantly face violence, marginalization, and oppression. They are "a collective of freaks and faggots that will never stop existing. Infinite and never ending. No one is going to kill us, we are going to live forever."

Deaf Club is a savage sound bath dripping with sardonicism: a blastbeat-centric hardcore punk assault channeling crust, thrash, and grind (un)sensibilities. Justin Pearson (The Locust, Dead Cross, Planet B), Brian Amalfitano, Scott Osment (Glassing, Planet B), and Jason Klein (Run With The Hunted), approach music as an opportunity to confront our collective sicknesses.

Fuck Money is an American scrape rock band based in Austin, TX. The group debuted in October 2021 consisting of members TaSzlin Trébuchet, Alton Jenkins, Bill Kenny, and Jeremy Humphries. Their sound draws on punk rock, noise, industrial, extreme music and other transgressive subgenres. The merciless & melodic stick-work of Alton Jenkins paired with the visceral intensity of frontman TaSz Trébuchet guides listeners down a path of challenging yet awe-inspiring sonic behavior.

N8NOFACE and Planet B con .MS.BOAN "N8NOFACE and Planet B con .MS.BOAN"

7"EP - $6.50
STREET DATE: 3/1/24
CAT#: 31G141
LABEL: Three One G

N8NOFACE has been described as a Chicano Flannery O'Connor playing chiptune Ministry, the Sleaford Mods of the American Southwest, Suicide for the 21st Century and Ghostmane meets darkwave synthpunk dashed with early Ween's glue-huffing pop. Lyrically, his sometimes romantic, oftentimes violent storytelling tunes lean toward Narcocorrido, the bloody ballads of Mexican drug cartels. It sounds dark on the surface, but really N8NOFACE's music is a lot of fun, and as exciting and cathartic as the birth of punk rock and hiphop.

Sharing the split is Planet B, which is Justin Pearson (Dead Cross, Deaf Club, The Locust), Luke Henshaw (Sonido de la Frontera), Kevin Avery (Field Day, Retox) and Scott Osment (Deaf Club, Glassing). The band was formed with the shared purpose of creating music subversive in sound and sobering in message. Their music is rooted in hip hop, hardcore punk, turntablism, and 70s-80s horror movie scores. For this release, Planet B teams up with Ms.BOAN (Medio Mutante, //TENSE//), the moody, mysterious & experimental, visionary synth-pop legend Mariana A Saldaña, who brings to the collaboration, the stormy emotions of coldwave, the ecstatic energy of EBM, and influences absorbed through her Mexican-American heritage. Serving up intense dance-pop, Ms.BOAN performs with a dramatic, emotional spirit.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Torture - N8NOFACE
  2. Makes Me Wanna Scream - N8NOFACE

STREET DATE: 2/14/24
CAT#: 31G139
LABEL: Three One G

Like a child born of the bell hooks classic All About Love and Maggie Nelson's Bluets, Adam Gnade's latest autobiographical novel takes a hard look at love in all forms--romantic, platonic, love of place, of chosen family, of destiny and purpose. Structured in large part as a book of lists, I Wish to Say Lovely Things is a complicated, big-hearted look at what it is stay loving and gentle in a violent age. Through it all, Gnade's characters struggle to get out of bed in the morning, fight for what they believe in while getting zero in return, and hope like hell in the face of hellish hopelessness. I Wish to Say Lovely Things is a graceful, philosophical, clear-eyed beacon with which to light your path through this painful, exhausting, and tremendously magnificent life.

Planet B "Fiction Prediction"

LP - $17.50
STREET DATE: 2/9/24
CAT#: 31G140
LABEL: Three One G

Planet B's second LP has been a long time in the making: four years, to be specific. Obviously, over this span of time, there has been an almost unimaginable amount of surreality and insanity to pull from when creating the band's unique hip-hop-punk-meets-sci-fi-horror-movie sonic aesthetic. As always, the sound is as confrontational as it is catchy, the lyrics scathing and the beats bizarre. Earworms abound. As with the band's first release, there are a host of guest collaborations on the various tracks, from Josie Cotton to David Scott Stone (ex-LCD Soundsystem, Melvins), D-Styles (Invisibl Skratch Piklz), and more. Perhaps most personally meaningful are the instrumental contributions from Gabe Serbian (The Locust) and Eric Livingston (Mamaleek), both family to the band, who have each passed on from this dimension and back to whatever radical planet they came from since the creation of the album.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. Dick On the Dance Floor
  2. Clogged Sync (feat. Eric Livingston and Ethan Campa)
  3. The Baader Review (feat. Crow Jane)
  4. The Bouquet (feat. D-Styles)

Nonexistent Night “In the Middle of a Boiling Sea”

LP - $17.40
STREET DATE: 1/26/24
CAT#: 31G138
LABEL: Three One G

"While there was a sparse beauty to the solo piano recording, this fleshed-out composition is even better (if better means ‘more full of darkness and dread’). The added instrumentation folds in a welcome curiosity and complexity to this tune."
– KPBS

Carrie Feller (who creates gloom-synth earworms under the moniker Hexa), Sal Gallegos and John Rieder (of the instrumental noise-rock duo Secret Fun Club) first began working together in mid-2019. The odd, left-field idea was a cover of “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” by The Cramps, which was eventually featured on the compilation Really Bad Music for Really Bad People (Three One G, 2020). This unlikely-but-in-retrospect-perfectly-sensible collaboration continued on in spring 2021, when Carrie recruited Sal and John as the rhythm section for a new instrumental composition. The result was “Prelude in Terror,” a sonic partnership so thrilling and intuitive that a full project as a trio seemed like the only rational next step. Nonexistent Night formed soon after, and the three musicians began writing the songs that would become the new LP In The Middle of A Boiling Sea over the subsequent 12 months. The band made its live debut in June 2022 and then, with the blessing and support of the label Three One G, began production of their record throughout late 2022 and early 2023. The band recently added Alia Jyawook (Scary Pierre, ex-Hot Nerds) as permanent cellist and guitarist and are already working on new songs for a follow-up record. Influenced by bands like Three Mile Pilot, Rachel’s, Slint, Chelsea Wolfe, King Woman, Kate Bush, June of 44, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Om, Low, Converge, and Tristeza, Nonexistent Night is elegiac, dramatic, and tinged with dread: post-rock for a drowning world.

This album was recorded by Dale Holland and Sal Gallegos. Mixed by Dale Holland and mastered by Nathan Joyner. It will be released by Three One G on blue smoke color vinyl

Angel Hair "Insect Immortality"

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 783495323099
STREET DATE: 1/12/24
CAT#: 31G137
LABEL: Three One G

Angel Hair began in late 1992 in Boulder, Colorado, and as PunkNews.org described them: "Angel Hair was a five-piece from Colorado whose music would grow to be associated with the chaotic, inventive San Diego scene of the early nineties. Bands such as Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Swing Kids, Clikitat Ikatowi and Mohinder are good reference points, but Angel Hair had a unique intensity that not even their West Coast peers could match." After many changes the lineup solidified in early 1994, issuing a split 7" EP with Bare Minimum on Titanic Records, and touring the west coast. The lineup included guitarists Andy Arahood (Red Sparowes) and Josh Hughes (The VSS, Pleasure Forever, Rabbits, SSOLD), bassist Todd Corbett (Stiffwhiff), drummer Paul Iannacito (Generalissimo), and vocalist Sonny Kay (The VSS, Year Future, Gold Standard Labs). During that tour, they recorded the 4-song Gravity EP with Matt Anderson in Chula Vista, which was released in time for a six week summer tour around the US in 1994. In that time they also released a split EP with The Fisticuffs Bluff on Unleaded Records. In the fall of '94, they traveled to San Diego again to record the "Insect Mortality" 12" which was released on Gravity in May 1995, four months after Angel Hair had broken up. Drummer Paul Iannacito moved away abruptly following a west coast tour over Christmas, and the band, feeling he was irreplaceable, called it quits after a little more than two years. During this time, they toured with peers such as Monsula, Clikatat Ikatowi, Spitboy, Garden Variety, J Church, Bare Minimum, Antioch Arrow, the Yah Mos, the Fucking Angels and the Vicious Ginks.

The band explains of the release: "'Insect Immortality' combines nearly all our previous releases, certainly all the ones worth hearing. Most, however, were recorded by Gravity's Matt Anderson in San Diego in a variety of DIY spaces and setups, none of which would qualify as a studio per se. They were recorded quickly, mixed immediately, and often available on tour less than 2 months later. It was an incredible time in our lives and those recordings really do capture the energy and momentum of what we were creating. But three decades later, after our ears and minds have evolved along with technology, it became evident at some point that all the music we released could be made to sound much better. Thanks to Matt's foresight and diligence, obtaining the original masters wasn't difficult. We handed them over to Pete Lyman, a giant in the mastering world, and our old chum from Boulder, present at the first and last Angel Hair shows and many in between. Pete remixed the tracks from our 12" and most of the EP's from the ground up, and the difference is huge. These songs have never sounded so intense and everyone in the band is very well represented."

"Angel Hair's music has a certain unforgettable quality that places it in the canon of hardcore classics... A vicious, surreal and surprisingly exhilarating maelstrom of San Diego-styled hardcore, and it is certainly one of best (bands) Gravity has put out. This diamond in the rough is highly, highly recommended for fans of chaotic hardcore." --PunkNews.org

"How to Lose Friends and Irritate People" by Justin Pearson

BOOK - $10.70
STREET DATE: 12/22/23
CAT#: 31G065
LABEL: Three One G

In the book, How To Lose Friends and Irritate People, Justin Pearson reveals his misadventures with two DJ duos borrowing him as a frontman, lending some "punk" street cred to their music. Known for being part of bands like The Locust, All Leather, and Retox, as well as the owner of Three One G Records, Justin has paved the way for bizarre, abrasive and political music, while pushing the envelope of what is expected or what can be done in a band. The Bloody Beetroots and Designer Drugs approached him to sing on their albums, and what came out of those two experiences is both pathetic and hilarious. From being forced to lip sync at Australian festivals in front of thousands, to being lost in the woods somewhere in Pennsylvania at a music video shoot gone wrong, Justin questions not only the DJ's motives, but his own as well. Embracing actual musical instrumentation instead of laptop playlists, Justin trudges through the murky waters of musical capitalism.

How To Lose Friends and Irritate People is comprised of two stories, "Now I Will Make a Sound For You to Hear, A Sound Without My Mouth" and "A Sucker is Born Every Minute", originally separately bound in each own's book, as well as a flexi record in each book featuring All Leather "We Eat Gauche Caviar" and Ill Saint M "A Pig's Orphan" (featuring Justin Pearson). All parts bound together as one, creating more than just a book, but a collectors item, artifact, and maybe even an all around "fuck you" to Kindles and digital downloads. The book has since been reprinted as one novella, featuring only one of the Flexi postcard records as part of the packaging.

"Justin Pearson occupies a unique niche within the world of underground music in America. As a member of polarizing bands such as The Locust and All Leather, he's become synonymous with music which redefines the limits of technical prowess while blurring the lines between punk, noise, experimentalism and outright assault. As a lyricist and author, his aggressively contrary attitude and at times hilarious commentary on the scuzzy reality of do-it-yourself culture provide a glimpse into the mind of an artist whom, one could argue, has effectively used the underground to his advantage for close to 20 years. Which isn't to say he's an opportunist. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone contributing back to the culture from whence they came with the consistency and dedication Pearson exhibits year after year. Wearing his ideals on his sleeve, he is an icon within the punk scene -- a cantankerous, shape-shifting, immaculately-groomed hybrid of old attitudes and new. With punk as his platform, Pearson has crisscrossed the globe endlessly, experiencing people and places from a vantage point few others could imagine. His writing sheds light on the mostly unglamorous reality of rock (anti-) stardom in the twenty-first century, free of the typical clichés of hotel rooms destroyed and groupies disrespected. Pearson's life and art are case studies in DIY and few, if any, put their money where their proverbial mouths are with such aplomb". -- Sonny Kay

"For some reason, outspoken iconoclast Justin Pearson constantly finds himself dead center in a whirlwind of chaos. His unique energy and steadfastly rebellious outlook tends to explosively catalyze every situation he enters, resulting in hilarious, sometimes utterly tragic results. His hair raising decents into the moronic chasms of DJ culture are no exception. Underneath the party lights, gallons of sweat and an avalanche of "bass" there lurks a milieu diseased with brain dead idiocy, logistical incompetence and corruption. Can idealistic Justin withstand the karmic horror of this particularly mentally-retarded avenue of mainstream culture and survive with his integrity, health and soul intact? Reading these two harrowing tales will clearly reveal the answer. Justin always takes big chances in life and more often than not, the outcome is as absurd as it is riveting." -- Weasel Walter

"Justin Pearson is back with more tales from a life stranger than fiction. In this new work, Justin takes us along for a ride on his ill-fated Australian tour with the Bloody Beetroots in front of 15,000 sweaty/screaming bodies whose idea of anarchy comes more from American Apparel than Emma Goldman. In another story, after many hours of driving in a crowded van with a bunch of beer-drinking-beef jerky eating kids on the way to a video shoot that may or may not involve a live goat, we arrive to the location of the shoot: a remote forest somewhere in the state of Pennsylvania. JP tells each story like no one else could--mainly because no one else gets himself into quite the same kind of misadventures as he does." -- Jose Palafox

"If ever you find yourself lost in that murky abyss between triumph and failure, personal politics and paycheck, let these words of wit and wisdom from Justin Pearson serve as your guide." -- Jordan Blilie

Stress Positions "Harsh Reality"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 12/8/23
CAT#: 31G136
LABEL: Three One G

Stress Positions is a band from Chicago, IL. The band is made up of three members from the now-defunct C.H.E.W. (Drummer Jonathan Giralt, guitarist Benyamin Rudolph, and bassist Russell Harrison) with new vocalist Stephanie Brooks. The band formed in 2020 during the Covid pandemic and plays forward-looking classic American hardcore punk. A new EP on Iron Lung records is due in September, as is an LP from Three One G. This is jungle D-Beats for clapping cheeks. Expect the unexpected in the kingdom of madness.

Harsh Reality was recorded by Seth Engel (Floatie, C.H.E.W, Nnamdi, Ratboys ), mixed by Matt Russell (Big Laugh, Oozing Wound, Rezen), and mastered by James Plotkin (Botch, Voivod, Cave In).

"Stress Positions barrel through most of these songs at such blistering speeds that they almost become airborne, leaving scorch marks on the ground. Giralt's dense, thundering drumming ignites the band's riffs and gives them their core character--they're relentless and frantic, though they can jump from pulverizing to swinging like flicking a light switch. Stress Positions are as loud as you'd expect--Rudolph's seesawing guitars alone can fill a room--but Brooks's voice is somehow even louder, so that her sharp holler punctures the avalanche of noise like a giant spike." --Chicago Reader

"...there's so much detail and nuance immediately found in the songwriting, creating tension and resolve, only to bludgeon it all into obscurity. This is not caveman hardcore, Stress Positions play with a sense of brilliance and a earthquaking dexterity. C.H.E.W. may be no more, but long live Stress Positions, perhaps your new favorite hardcore band."--Post-Trash

"...hardcore with lots of fun surprises thrown in… Vocalist Stephanie Brooks has a brutal vocal delivery that oscillates between shredding and shrieking, only slowing down to softer singing on an occasion or two… highly recommended."--Maximum RocknRoll

SQUID PISSER eviscerates the ego and and all things serene with their own vibrant form of vicious and mucky hardcore. Slamming down dolphin corpses at breakneck speeds, the duo, which is comprised of Tommy Meehan on guitar (Deaf Club, Cancer Christ, Sweatband Records, Cartoon Network) and Seth Carolina (Starcrawler), have constructed a fresh and mucousy new alien craft powered by tightly controlled noise-guitar, savage primal drum work, and gooped up vocal deliveries that might sound like a gaggle of frogs thrown into a garbage disposal (although the Squid boys wouldn't recommend doing this).

Conceptualized and formed in 2022, the band decided to fully utilize planet Earth's viral slumber in order to gestate, write, and record 2 full length albums worth of material. Throughout the year, SQUID PISSER played a handful of shows in California and Nevada as a 2 piece as they continued the quest for further personnel and collaborators. Tommy Meehan's tightly controlled noise-onslaught of rainbow vomit (spat out of a guitar amp via manic pedalboard wizardry and sophisticated finger work) paired with the utterly brutal, breakneck, and savage drumming of Seth Carolina, merge to create a collection of tracks that have been forged in a totally fucked and sonically chaotic storm of pus and goo.

Their debut release, MY TADPOLE LEGION, is a mutated smorgasbord of songs and guest vocalists from projects like: MELT BANANA, NEKROGOBLIKON, CANCER CHRIST, PUNCH, THE LOCUST, WACKO, and more. Also featured prominently is John Clardy of TERA MELOS on drums for 3 of the songs.

My Tadpole Legion was mixed by Kurt Ballou (CONVERGE, GODCITY STUDIOS) and mastered by Alan Douches (West West Side Music).

Founded in 2021, by what can only be called, astral influence. Married couple Paula and Dave (Slayer, Fantômas, Testament, Mr. Bungle, Misfits, Dead Cross) Lombardo formed Venamoris, as a result of some persistent persuasion on the latter’s part. Dave, who is in charge of drums and production on the record, explains: “Several months after meeting Paula in 2010, she hesitantly shared with me her past decade-long career as the lead back up singer for Wayne Newton. She later played me some of the demos she recorded throughout the years and I was floored by her sonically soothing, rich tone and natural, instinctive ability to harmonize. I was determined to persuade her to return to her creative self. It’s been a deeply gratifying journey witnessing this music come to life.”

Songwriter, Paula Lombardo, who performs vocals and piano for this project, bursts with vulnerability and intimacy, addressing a broad scope of emotion: anger, healing, pain, hope. It’s evident that Venamoris was founded out of love, passion, communication, respect, and trust. One person thriving in music encouraged the other, who had abandoned music to find their way back. It is the result of many late nights with too much wine, and even more truth laid bare: an aural couple's journaling generously shared with the world.

Venamoris was recorded and produced at Ritmo Studio by Dave Lombardo. Drum Overdubs recorded at Studio 606. Mixed at Ritmo Studio by David A. Lombardo. Mastered by John Golden at Golden Mastering. Features guest appearances from Tyler Bates (Jerry Cantrell, Manson), Ra Diaz (Korn, Suicidal Tendencies), Jack Gibson (Exodus), George Pajon (Black Eyed Peas, Cairo Knife Fight), and Tim Stewart (Lady GaGa, Damnage). The album is pressed on two limited vinyl varaints.

Justin Pearson (Dead Cross, Deaf Club, The Locust), Luke Henshaw (Sonido de la Frontera), Kevin Avery (Field Day, Retox) and Scott Osment (Deaf Club, Glassing, Volente Beach) formed Planet B with the shared purpose of creating music subversive in sound and sobering in message. Their music lays somewhere just out of reach of genre, with aesthetics rooted in hip hop, hardcore punk, turntablism, and 70s-80s horror movie scores. It is catchy, heavily percussive, and eerie all at once, much like the creative output of dark dance duo ADULT., a pair that seek to harness “the perverse aspects of the late '70s analog dystopian post-modernism.” These artists’ bodies of work mirror one another in form and function, and both “Release Me” and “Glass in The trash” encapsulates the ethos of both, allowing the duos’ similar mindsets to collide. Nicola Kuperus’s hypnotic vocals add an occult aura, mysteriously alluring and supernatural, pulsating and equally intense alongside Pearson’s aggressive style. Henshaw and Adam Lee Miller’s sampling, sequencing and synthesizing entangle and diverge seamlessly, providing dance-driven soundtracks fit for an apocalypse. Both tracks ebb and flow, pull and push, begs to be released and yet remains throbbing in your head long after it ends.

This record has been recorded by Adam Lee Miller and Luke Henshaw. Mixed and mastered by Brent Asbury at Measurable Harm.

LABEL: Three One G

Fuck Money is an American space punk band based in Austin, TX. The group debuted in October 2021 consisting of members TaSzlin Trébuchet (vocals) Alton Jenkins (drums), Bill Kenny (lead guitar), and Jeremy Humphries (bass guitar). Their sound draws on punk rock, noise, industrial, extreme music and other transgressive subgenres. Fuck Money was formed in 2020 during the latter half of the COVID pandemic that year. After writing their first EP, they spent their time recording at Arroyo Audio. The band has created a reputation of performing high energy, sporadic DIY shows in liminal spaces throughout the dark corners of the city-- The Austin Chronicle noted how “the band’s churning feedback swirl is equal parts imposing and obfuscating – curiously serene in its refusal to give its sonic-aggression a clear human face.” Their vocalist is also known for donning an unpredictable and tantalizing look at each show.

Fuck Money’s debut self-titled EP on Three One G is six songs of unrelenting ‘space punk,’ drawing influence from punk, noise, industrial, and extreme music elements. Described as sounding like “a fully rabid Deerhoof,” the merciless & melodic stick-work of Alton Jenkins, paired with the visceral intensity of frontman TaSz Trébuchet, guides listeners down a path of challenging, awe-inspiring sonic behavior adorned with biting yet hyper-melodic guitar melodies. Death From Above’s Jesse F. Keeler aptly explains the EP simply as, “Feeling at all costs. If I was trying to explain this to someone with no reference, I’d say it was like a pomegranate. Challenging to get at the fruit, but worth the effort.”

Microwaves "Discomfiture Atlas"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 10/14/22
CAT#: 31G127
LABEL: Three One G

Of innumerable bands that traffic in dissonance, the musick of Pittsburgh, PA’s Microwaves shears clean and hot as an oxy-lance through the defenses of even the most cynical noise rock aficionado. In this iteration of the band, which has been in existence now for 20 years, core members John Roman (drums, vocals) and David Kuzy (guitar, vocals) round themselves out with 2006 alum bassist/vocalist Adam MacGregor on one side (“Pyroclast”), and founding bassist/vocalist Steve Moore (Film composer and member of Zombi, Lovelock, Miracle, and more) on the other (“Plasma”). Over the years, Microwaves continues to pick up the loose ends left by Voivod, MX-80, Snakefinger, and some of their own Pittsburgh-area “math-rock” contemporaries, twisting them into a Gordian knot that at once rages and confounds.

Microwaves’ newest LP, Discomfiture Atlas, is being released by Three One G Records on October 14th. This album features guest appearances by Eric Paul (Arab on Radar, Doomsday Student, Psychic Graveyard), Sarah Quintero (Spotlights), Rebecca Burchette (Exosus), and Todd Rittman (Dead Rider).

Who among us doesn’t long for a “do-over” of our wreck of recent history? Maybe it’s that attitude that accounts for the ascendancy of multiverses, parallel dimensions, the “Berenstain/Berenstein” debate, etc., in public imagination. Whatever the reason, contemplating other planes of existence is no longer exclusive to the hard sci-fi wonk set. Apropos of all the above, Microwaves manifests their own twin realities over the two sides of Discomfiture Atlas, its second album on San Diego’s vaunted Three One G records. Though distinct, both sides of the album, “Pyrocast” and “Plasma,” salt the band’s terse alloy of thrash metal, no-wave, brutal prog, noise-rock, and math rock with a hint of pop brevity, if not the melody to match.

Even at a curmudgeonly 20 years of age, (both versions of) Microwaves lean into the new material with the desperate enthusiasm of a 50-something peeling out in a midlife-crisis Corvette. Roman delivers his usual cyborg clatter, careening through odd meters and deconstructing rock drumming according to plans laid out by Beefheart and Devo. MacGregor complements with tortuous lines that invoke eastern melodic ideas at times, though they seethe with distortion and gurgle queasily through analog filtering. His vocal palette has widened to include an unhinged/unschooled falsetto and a Teutonic metal shriek, used to great effect on “Hammerspace” alongside Kuzy’s wavering, town-crier bark. Kuzy executes his trademark spindly atonalities with a draftsman’s precision, alternately ratcheting through all of the first-wave thrash-metal riffs he probably ever wanted to hear. Moore’s performances on side “Plasma” present a tighter and more reeled-in quality, focused on timbre and monolithic repetition over the flash of the past. In an all-time first for Microwaves, the standout “Your Dumb Guts” finds Moore serving up a vocal melody with stunning earworm potential.

End of the Line, the short-lived San Diego hardcore band that was in the right place at the right time. Existing during summer 1991, its membership boasted Matt Anderson, Scott Bartoloni and Aaron Montaigne of seminal 90s band Heroin, who, for the most part, had switched instruments. Further intensifying this lineup was leather-throated vocalist Cory Linstrum. A mutual appreciation of Bl’ast!, Faith, Void and SSD acted as its starting point, leading the band down the left hand path of chaotic punk and hardcore. EOTL played a dozen shows during its brief reign. Its teeth were cut appearing alongside Aspirin Feast, Say No More, Struggle, Undertow, Downcast, Media Children and Blatz (among others), before obtaining an opening slot on a Born Against/Rorschach show. The display of raw pandemonium unleashed that evening saw End of the Line’s buzz spread to the East Coast as these bands returned from tour. Rapidly a bidding war began with EOTL in the middle. Vermiform offered a seven-inch deal, while Ebullition dangled the opportunity of a full length. The band chose the full length. Having previously recorded three tracks, EOTL now had the opportunity to record the rest of its set for posterity. The band was aware it wouldn’t last much longer. Heroin would be releasing its own LP and leaving for tour, while Linstrum would relocate to the Bay Area to front John Henry West. It was during these recording dates that End of the Line concluded with its final appearance, a September 1991 show with Fugazi and Jawbreaker. Without an active band to promote the release, Ebullition’s version of the End of the Line LP wallowed in obscurity, where it slowly became a cult classic of early 90s hardcore. Let End of the Line crush your eardrums like an artillery shell, leaving you in the mud with the rats, lice and dogs!

Netherlands “Kali Corvette”

CAT#: 31G122
LABEL: Three One G

Lead singer, multi-instrumentalist, compulsive creator, and unrepentant volume addict Timo Ellis (Yoko Ono, Cibo Matto, Sean Lennon, Joan As Police Woman, Spacehog) formed NETHERLANDS in 2010 in NYC. The band has since shared stages with Napalm Death, Melt Banana, Mutoid Man, Yob, Retox, Black Flag, Eyehategod, Flipper, Martin Rev, The Death Set, Moon Tooth, and Witch Mountain, among many others. Now with drummer David Keith (Rainbow) and synth-bassist Kelsey Warren (Blak Emoji), the band continues to reject restraint in favor of maximum impact: shredding chops, soaring vocals, and maddening hooks. Netherlands crushes decades' worth of bombast into psychotropic nuggets of evil sludge-rock bliss, with nods to the dirtbag rituals of 70’s acid rock and punk, the grandeur of 80’s arena rock, and the guttural intensity of 00’s posthardcore. KALI CORVETTE is Netherlands’ 6th full LP, and features all the hallmarks of Ellis’ work; blistering guitar heroics, primal drumming, and searing caterwauls. However KALI CORVETTE veers bracingly into the realm of electro-noise-punk, ratcheting up the intensity into a uniquely weaponized form of rock that reaches towards high art. The record features guest performances by Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers), Michael Kubacki (Car Bomb), Tim Dahl (Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, Child Abuse), Daisy Press (Steve Reich) and Suzanne Von Aichinger (The Suzannes.) KALI CORVETTE is another chapter in the book of a band that’s consistently released heavy music on its own terms and with its own undeniable personality. There’s a reason contemporary heavy luminaries like Joe Duplantier of Gojira and Bill Kelliher of Mastodon count themselves amongst Netherlands’ biggest fans, and KALI COREVETTE’s 7 tracks effortlessly demonstrate NETHrock’s potency once again.

TRACK LISTING:

  1. NATURAPHOBIA
  2. D.T.A.
  3. ARE YOU LOOKING FOR ME?
  4. SO SICK
  5. THERE'S A GLITCH IN HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS

Haunted Horses “The Worst Has Finally Happened”

LP - $17.25
LP UPC: 795044139419
STREET DATE: 7/22/22
CAT#: 31G126
LABEL: Three One G

Haunted Horses is an industrial-punk trio hailing from Seattle, WA. Their sound is thunderous and chaotic, utilizing a wall of noise techniques through an onslaught of keys, guitars and drums. Myke Pelly's off kilter drumming and Colin Dawson's architectural noise structures create jittery post-punk that is both upbeat and gloomy. Most recently, the band enlisted Seattle-based bassist Brian McClelland of Filth is Eternal and He Whose Ox is Gored, creating an added level of heavy rhythmic noise that not only contributes an exciting dynamic layer to the album sonically, but to their already-captivating live performance as well. The bleak vocals are persistently ominous in a seductive way, conjuring up the nightmarish aura of a dissonant horror-film soundtrack. With reviewers like Anthony Fantano (Needle Drop) likening their previous work to legendary bands such as Swans, Bauhaus, and Killing Joke, Haunted Horses carry on the tradition of noise that can terrorize as well as entrance, oftentimes simultaneously. This is evident in the list of hard-hitting contemporaries they’ve shared the stage and toured with, including Lingua Ignota, Portrayal of Guilt, A Place to Bury Strangers, Bambara, and Boy Harsher. Fans of Einstürzende Neubauten, Swans, Girl Band, Death Grips, The Soft Moon, Street Sects, Ho99o9, and Uniform will find Haunted Horses a welcome addition to their lexicon.

The Worst Has Finally Happened continues in the band’s approach to music as a battering ram into the brain, now as a trio with Myke Pelly, Colin Dawson, Brian McClelland (Filth is Eternal, He Whose Ox is Gored). Sounds sway from mechanical heartbeat thumps and the delay-drenched beeping of echolocation radar devices tracking down a potential victim in “Swarms,” to something resembling an alarm signifying Chernobyl-strength a nuclear meltdown in “Thorns.” Everything feels perfectly orchestrated to leave the listener on edge. It’s hard to tell if Haunted Horses’ music is meant for the hunter or the hunted, but either way, it holds on tight, sinks its claws in and doesn’t let up.
