Bliss Fields “Bliss Fields”

CD - $7.00
STREET DATE: 5/17/24
CAT#: SDR-123
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Toronto’s Bliss Fields has existed in various forms over the past eleven years. Formerly known as Iris, the band started as an indie/shoegaze band writing music in the early wave of the ‘shoegaze revival’ sound. Things fizzled out shortly after, and in the late 2010s, the group reformed under the new name, Bliss Fields, now with a restructured lineup. 2022’s LP, “Slowly, Forever” pushed the band the furthest they’ve come in their sound, incorporating more indie and alt-rock leaning elements onto their already established shoegaze sound. And now in 2024, the band continues to evolve further on their self titled EP, and their first on Sunday Drive Records. Influences from emo and alternative rock bands like Jimmy Eat World and The Smashing Pumpkins begin to flood into the songwriting; bringing more anthemic & catchy hooks, with heavier, distorted riffs to each song. Bliss Fields is in the process of once again reinventing themselves and continues to push their sound, which is sure to be heard on their next follow up on SDR.

Holydanger "The Ethereal Beauty"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 3/22/24
CAT#: SDR-116
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Somewhere along an intersection between new-wave, post-punk, and indie rock, lies Holydanger. The band formed in Paris, France in 2021, and in little time, already formed their full-length, debut LP, "The Ethereal Beauty". They recorded with UK producer, Jim Spencer (New Order, Electronic, The Charlatans) and the songs were mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios by engineer, Frank Arkwright (Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura). After a year or so, the LP came to fruition and resulted in a refreshing take on this sound. Approaching new-wave/post-punk from the members' hardcore perspective gives even the softer songs a bit of edge, and ensures that each track has a catchy hook. Tracks like the opener, "Nowhere Near Prepared" or "Radiant You" showcase this the best, showing the range of an anthemic pop song to an emo-inspired ballad song. "The Ethereal Beauty" was released in the fall of 2023 independently, and is now being reissued on Sunday Drive Records, and available for the first time on 12" vinyl.

Hollow Suns "Free Fall"

12"EP - $15.30
STREET DATE: 3/8/24
CAT#: SDR-115
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Following their debut 2022 LP, "Otherside", Hollow Suns returns with the EP, "Free Fall". Tokyo band, Hollow Suns are no strangers to U.S. hardcore/punk and have always had elements of it in their music. For the most part, Hollow Suns pulled more from 90's alternative rock bands like Foo Fighters or Jimmy Eat World; creating catchy guitar-hook-driven music. On "Free Fall" which is still present, however, Hollow Suns are diving more into the post-hardcore mix of things, pulling inspiration more from bands like Quicksand, Jawbox, and Helmet. This is a natural evolution in sound for Hollow Suns, which primarily shines on the title track, 'Free Fall'; while a track like, 'No Progression' displays their talent for writing a perfect guitar alt-rock song. Like their previous LP, "Free Fall" is also mixed and mastered by Will Yip, which adds his signature touch on each of these songs, with artwork from Kyle Niland (Scheme Records) to present these songs with a nod to 90's post-hardcore artwork. "Free Fall" is available in the USA from Sunday Drive Records and on Ice Grill$ in Japan.

Kairo "After Forever"

12"EP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 2/23/24
CAT#: SDR-113
LABEL: Sunday Drive

"After Forever" is the second EP from Pensacola, Florida's alternative rock band, Kairo. This EP follows their 2022 debut, "Wither" released on From Within Records, which established their sound somewhere between emo and alternative rock with a mix of grunge and shoegaze. Sharing members of Statement of Pride and Glazed Eyes, Kairo is a very different band than the aforementioned, however, similarities exist with the attention to melody focused in alt/indie rock, and heaviness shared in hardcore and alt-rock from the sound of Les Pauls. "After Forever" is over in just about 14 minutes; each track hits and delivers with tons of melody--something that is difficult to attend to within the huge wave of sound. Kairo has crafted these four tracks to flow seamlessly into each other, making it catchy and easy to leave on repeat.

Generation "Satellites & Suns"

7"EP - $7.50
STREET DATE: 2/16/24
CAT#: SDR-108
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Expressive thoughts & feelings, delivered with melody and hardcore is a quick way to sum up Generation's sound. Formed in 2019 in Manchester, England by a group of friends who've played together and in separate hardcore bands (Insist, Standpoint, Reflect, etc.), one of the goals of the band was to have an everlasting band to write for, for years to come--and in a different approach, stylistically. Generation was introduced through their 2019 LP, "Call It A Life" on IOU Records, which showcased their talent of excellent writing of rev-summer era hardcore. A couple of EPs later, you can begin to hear more progression--still very much inspired by DC Hardcore, but with more melody and leaning into more structured alternative-rock songs--think Hüsker Du or The Replacements mixed with One Last Wish and Dag Nasty. On their first EP since 2021, "Satellites & Suns" greatly showcases the skill and progression that Generation has crafted over the years--three songs, full of catchy hooks and melodies to sing along to or stage dive to.

  3. Disheartened

STREET DATE: 12/1/23
CAT#: SDR-101
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Wandering, distance and sleeplessness creep through each song on the debut LP, "Songs About Ghosts" from Texas, indie-rock artist, Juan Cordero. Born over the years from songwriter, Jonathan Perez (Trauma Ray) as an output of solo expression, Juan Cordero succeeds in this; while drenched in fuzzy guitars and noisy melodies. With the help of friends & bandmates, Mario Cernadas and Uriel Avilia, with mixing/master engineer, Corey Coffman, "Songs About Ghosts" is crafted exactly as envisioned from Perez. Welding influences from Dinosaur Jr to Red House Painters and Duster, Juan Cordero creates these haunting, yet beautiful songs that manage to get stuck in your head from their catchy melodies and mysterious-like lyrics. Still "Doomed"

12"EP - Black
STREET DATE: 11/24/23
CAT#: SDR-109
LABEL: Sunday Drive

While still retaining the heaviness and waves of noise heard on their debut, "Faint", the St. Louis shoegaze band, Still returns on "Doomed" with a focus on melody--constantly drifting through the guitars and vocals. Reunited with longtime producer, Gabe Usery and mastered again with Zac Montez, they have clearly all approached "Doomed" a little differently. Vocals are more upfront, paired with the leading guitars and a background of fuzzy bass and crashing drums. Still seemed to have fully realized in these songs--dealing with dullness and yearning, yet delivered with abrasiveness and whispering vocals.

Strange Joy "Power Pop"

7"EP - $7.50
STREET DATE: 11/17/23
CAT#: SDR-103
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Right when Strange Joy came out of the gates in Houston in 2021, it was obvious there was something unique and special about the band. A raw energy was always present at their live shows, always paired with a sense of melody, and sticking out from the lineup--in the best way possible. Over the past year, with continuous shows and newcomers, Strange Joy have naturally evolved and adapted into what we hear today. Their new record, Power Pop is their strongest display yet; showing a much more straight-forward, fast and angry hardcore sound. Not to say the band has abandoned their melody, but have incorporated it into these songs with a new approach. Ringing guitar strings are heard throughout the tracks, while other guitars have a fuzzy and driving sound, along with Castillo's vocal patterns that never fail to make Strange Joy's songs as catchy as they are. Power Pop is titled appropriately--this is Strange Joy at their most powerful sounding yet.

Dan Darrah & The Rain "Rivers Bridges Trains"

LP - $17.25
STREET DATE: 11/17/23
CAT#: SDR-107
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Dan Darrah is a twenty-something Toronto-based songwriter and guitar player whose compositions embed themselves in listeners' memories via off-kilter Beatles-esque melodicism and impressionistic lyrics that come by their romanticism obliquely, ironically, almost aphoristically. Whereas Darrah has for years been recording songs off the cuff by himself in his bedroom, his new album, Rivers Bridges Trains, was recorded in a proper studio, over several months, with the help of players and singers he's known and collaborated with since his adolescence on Greater Toronto's eastern outskirts. The album, which collates and repurposes many of those old bedroom songs, is protean and rangy in the tradition of songcraft-oriented acts like Teenage Fanclub, Mojave 3, and Jets to Brazil. British Invasion harmony melds with country-rock languor as a somewhat bemused kitchen-sink realism emerges out of a swirl of half-recovered memories.

Feverchild "Altering a Memory"

Feverchild "Altering a Memory"

LP - $16.60
STREET DATE: 11/3/23
CAT#: SDR104
LABEL: Sunday Drive

Feverchild seemed to have mastered their sound of late 90's post-hardcore/emo on their latest and most thorough release yet, "Altering a Memory". Following a self-titled EP and two-song single (the latter appearing on this album) in addition to their first tour, the band is at their strongest yet. "Altering a Memory" is primarily driven by melody--something the band has always incorporated, but now more attentive to. The intro track and "Eva" show the band stripping away some of the abrasiveness of their sound, and pull back to incorporate more quiet and atmospheric elements; ultimately creating a more diverse album where both the quiet and louder moments are more noticeable. "Altering a Memory" may be a stepping stone--not just for Feverchild--but perhaps for a new wave of emo to come.
