Vivians hail from Toronto, where their three members — Leigh Fisk, Dan Darrah, and Jacob Hellas — have been longtime collaborators and co-conspirators. But “Take Your Desires for Reality,” the band’s first LP, moves the trio well outside familiar terrain. The 7-song album pulls from UK rave, psychedelia, jangle pop, and big beat, triangulating a sound that shimmers and pulses. Dense arrangements constructed by Darrah and Hellas give way to sugary hooks that quickly re-entangle themselves with squelchy synths, arpeggiators, stolen loops, and the golden age of Roland machines. Anthemic and abrasive, Fisk’s vocals intensify the madness, a part-shaman, part-raver who sends each chorus soaring. It’s the music of impulse, of long-gone Human Traffic weekends — the music made wrestling with uncooperative technology in a pre-DAW world where mess and imperfection reigned supreme. Mixed and mastered by Micah Brown and featuring appearances from Danielle Clark, the LP is available on vinyl and digital worldwide through Sunday Drive Records.
